Em...

...barrassing.

One of these things is not like the other.

One of these is.

The pictures speak for themselves, but the story is just too good to pass up. The poinsettia fell down behind Pastor Ritch (without him noticing) immediately after he had finished telling a story about an emperor who was completely oblivious to the things going on around him while standing before his loyal subjects, "The Emporer's New Clothes".

Mike just picked the WRONG day to wear MY favorite tie!

Keeping Busy On Day 2 (Friday)

Thankfully, there was a good reason to get up early in the middle of this potentially wasted weekend. No, not Black Friday sales. I had a faint interest in finding a good deal on an air compressor, but too faint. Drey-dog is in town this week and we had alot to catch up on. How I left a restaurant without getting a picture of the food...I'll never know.

Next was another great opportunity to keep busy. I was recruited to help with picking up and arranging plants and other decorations for the church sanctuary with our resident decorator, Paul. Paul is getting to that stage in life where driving needs to be reconsidered. Sunday will be his last day behind the wheel, but since the plants we had to pick up were all the way in Eureka, he got a head start on the passenger thing. Driving to Eureka is so boring anyway, you really need a traveling buddy.

The communication issues we had with the lady at the greenhouse were astounding. Honestly, there are few things in life more frustrating than someone who does not even attempt to speak on the same wavelength as you. It was like there was a time delay in every response. If we asked a question, the answer came two responses later...every time. It's one type of example of times when I get fascinated at the idea of figuring out why people have certain behaviors, learned over time by many different situations.

The wreaths outside and crimping table inside reminded me of church youth group years ago. The fam spent alot of hours putting together real Christmas wreaths in the basement of our church to sell and raise money for youth trips. I wasn't allowed to use the crimper back then, so I was a little tempted to try it out. Don't worry, I still have all my fingers.

As always, where I really enjoy being, most days, is at church. So it was fitting that I got to spend some time on a boring weekend setting up something there. Paul had to be just as patient with me as I did with him. He has meticulous standards for how things should look, and I'm kinda dense. Looked pretty good in the end, but there is more coming.
Productivity was had, even though it was REALLY, REALLY slow. It took me the rest of the day to catch up on bills and records so that my budgeting can get back on track. I now know exactly how much I don't have for Christmas gifts this year.

Earlier in the day, a friend who I called couldn't seem to hear my voice. I thought it was just a fluke until it embarrassingly happened again. The problem seemed to be a crack near the base, undoubtedly covering another loose connection behind it, all caused by dropping my phone this morning for the 187th time. Squeezing the case seemed to take care of the problem, so one of clamps I borrowed from dad to help with break work continued to prove useful.Did you know that when you put a clamp on something, it squishes BOTH sides of the object you are clamping? Ya it does.

It seemed to be all better (with the exception of some new permanently squished keys) until I tried to leave voicemails with two people this morning and got that sassy voicemail lady's voice interrupting me with "I did not get your message". :-P

Treat Day!

It's treat day. The day mom buys something special to eat. You know it's here because people who aren't normally around start to show up. The kitchen looks alot busier and cooking goodness fills the air. Everyone sits at the table and you wait for your coveted gift...a bone.

Peanut butter flavored this year. Mmmmmmm. Interesting thing about Tilly is that she is the sweetest dog in the world, but with a few exceptions. We got her from PAWS with no history, and signs of some sort of abuse or an accident on one of her paws. A few things will set her off. I learned one of them when I leaned in for a kiss while she wasn't in the mood (life lesson about women...I...think...so). The resulting wound on my chin was supposed to be worth it since it pretty much looked like a totally awesome Harrison Ford chin scar. Stupid thing healed completely though. I don't know what's more disturbing - my desire to emulate Ford's chin, or the fact that some dermatologist actually has a site about big screen skin conditions. So anyway, what was I talking about? Oh ya, the other thing we've learned which will set her off, is trying to steal her bone. The picture above is the closest near death experience you will see today. Mom has gotten to the point where she can take the bones away though. No one messes with Mom!

My brother, Dad and I have a bad habit of chatting about computers or computer games during most family get togethers. I'm sure Mom LOVES it. But we had someone to add flavor to the discussion this year. My buddy Noah is not able to make it home for Thanksgiving because of a really annoying work schedule and inconvenient car troubles. So, he graciously accepted the offer to join us for the afternoon. Thanks Noah! It was very enjoyable.

I purchased at least 10 new shirts/sweaters last year at the end of winter, but which one did I wear yet again for a holiday event? Oy.

Oh MAN! There was TOTALLY some room left over by the white meat. Some waldorf salad would have easily fit in there! Mom wised up a little bit this year. For the last few years (ish...I don't recall how many) Mom has been preparing the entire Thanksgiving meal herself. Since they haven't been large family hooplas, it's not a big deal, but it's still alot of things to prepare at one time. She finally decided to delegate a couple things to Eric and me. Bro brought the deviled eggs and I made a dessert. JUST a dessert you say? HO no. Million Dollar Oats'n Honey Granola Pie! Yes I saw it on Oprah - no I don't want to talk about it.

With the likelihood of it being one of the nicest days we'll have in a while combined with the fact that it is unlikely I will be productive in ANYTHING else during my boring four day weekend, it seemed a good time for some yard work at the folk's house, both high and low.

Christopher Walken Rocks

Eric (from Eric and Charlotte) and Marc Were two of my closest friends growing up. Eric and Char live happily in Michigan with their new baby, Clifford, while Marc is still a Peorian for a short time.

Marc recently discovered that I had an interest in shooting, and contacted me shortly before the end of the workday on Wednesday to see if I'd like take the gun for a spin at his parent's place. I'm not sure what he was doing all day, but I don't think it was work. The best answer I've gotten out of him about what he's up to these days is "I'm a hobo".

Weapons of choice were Marc's 9mm HK pistol and .22 rifle, and my 9mm Glock and (dad's) 20 gauge shotgun.

30 yards with the pistols. Left side - eh, not so bad for my second time out. Especially since you don't know how many shots didn't hit the page.

It was quickly too dark to shoot any longer, but there was a gourd with a death wish still to execute. I took the shotgun to it, inflicting only a flesh wound. Marc yeilded similar results. So I kept an eye out for nosy neighbors while Marc put him down at close range with the pistol.

The rifle yielded pretty sweet results at around 40 yards, and we have something new on the fridge now to show for it.
Sorry LaVerne

Marc will be shipping off to begin serving in the Coast Guard in January. :-(

Cha Cha Cha

Title credit totally goes to II Peter.

A long Men's Ministry meeting at church went even longer than expected but yielded some interesting and fun stuff to prepare for in 2009.

Because of the extra long meeting, I missed the vast majority of Salsa Rueda 101 at Joanne/Nicole/Amanda's dance studio (garage), but was able to enjoy what I did learn in that half hour more than the eight weeks of swing in a formal class setting two years ago. It was great to see new and old faces in a new setting. Matt (hooded sweatshirt) did a fantastic job leading the lessons, and everyone pitched in to help me catch up when I arrived. Only stepped on Becky's foot one time! Not sure I'll become a dancing fool like Becks, but the comfort zone exit was definitely worth it.

Work it Byorn, work it!

I'm not allowed to take normal pictures of Joanne. Only crazy ones. Ooooookay!
No fake laughing this time.
Thanks ladies!

Weekend Roundup (more food!)

Saturday was another morning choir practice. Fred loses his grip on us for the coming week, but then owns us every waking minute the first week of December. It's going to be interesting. Anyway. After practice, choir folk, bandies and several others checked out a semi-new place in town called the Chili Works Cafe. No surprises from Sarah, but from the look on her face, she was thinking about it. Three out of five Sarahs in the same place at the same time. Kinda scary, but just like the president and the next few in line for command, we don't allow all five Sarah's to be in the same place at the same time.

Later that day, I attended our Church's Adoption Ministry open house. Sounds weird, I know. But I knew most of the families there, and was invited by the family hosting it. Good times. Met some new folks, learned more about the current situations some of them were in, and got to pet the puppy! Several adoptions have gone through or nearly completed this year in families that I had already been friends with. There are still alot of adoptions within our church kicking off right now, but I don't know them very well, and many of them belong to our sister church in Washington. The family hosting the event brought home Nathan this past June from Guatemala, and I had the joy of being there for my first adoption homecoming. Here are links to some of the families who have or will be finishing adoptions soon, Lord willing.

Armstrong Family: 2+3=5!
Trusting the Lord for #7
Waiting No More 4 Number 4
Walk by faith, not by sight

Directly after that food-filled event was Kelli's thing at Kari's. Three out of five people playing this game had no clue how to play, making my victory quite hollow.

Butch beat up SarahK in boxing, but she got the last laugh when he tried to come in late to a funny story. "Hey, what's going on? Something funny? I'm in."

Spotlight On Josh

After spending so much time cooking and trading insults with Josh last night, I think it's about time for a spotlight post. Andrew originally came up with the idea of writing a post to spotlight a friend. Stoltzfus was first on my list, but I guess he's boring or something because I never got around to it.

Josh (JoshF is clarification is ever required) moved in the same day my last roommate ditched me for some chick. The last time I lived with a good friend from highschool, Matt, things weren't as easy as I thought they would be. Matt is still a good friend. You can tell by how harshly we insult each other over the phone. But some of our differences were quite difficult to ignore at times. So with Josh, I knew it was possible that we could clash, but so far I've been pretty wrong.

As you can see, Josh is a very cheery fellow. He's often able to stay positive even on a crazy busy and stressful day. A jovial chap with a witty remark on hand at all times. We knew each other from Highschool track, choir and MST3K nights with a couple of people from my class. Today's MST3K can be found now at RiffTrax (not sure every clip is appropriate).

He was going to make biscuits and gravy for something earlier this week. At the last minute, plans changed, but our hearts were still set on home made gravy. Soooo, guess what we had for dinner Friday night? Josh is a little obsessed (in my opinion) with making things from scratch, and doing so with the perfect combination of seasonings, often found by trial and error. But he's always willing to make the time necessary to do it right. Recently, alot of his recipes for large group activities have come out "accidentally" spicy, but I think that's just a cover for the way he likes it. Jerk!

First comes the biscuit batter. Points to whoever notices Jed's handiwork in the picture above. The instructions were all in ounces, so Josh had a heck of a time converting to cups and teaspoons. Eventually, we found that a miscalculation was made, and everything except that one ingredient had to be increased by 3/4. This is how I measured 3/4 of the original amount of Crisco. I'm a genius. We could have just increased that one ingredient by a fraction, and doubled everything else, but nooooo, don't listen to Kevin. It's nice having a roomie that doesn't read the blog :-) Don't worry ladies, we are a couple of eligible bachelors who know how to resolve conflict. Not peacefully, but resolved none the less :-)

Despite our meticulous measuring, the final biscuit batter did not turn out correctly We lost 50% of it sticking to the wax paper and Josh's hands. Very sad, but at the end of the two hour ordeal, we did have some excellent biscuits and gravy. Thanks Josh!

Mmmm Food

I've decided that three or more pictures of food justifies the title. But first..

We talked about Missions in Bible study last night, how we can participate and had a missions mindset in our normal lives. But also, how our participation in local or short term missions impacts us when we do them. The Rescue Mission and South Side mission have had a bigger impact than I knew. Someone at work recently pointed out a Peoria website which reports on certain crime in the city, and posts pictures of the offenders. I'm alot less interested than I used to be in being judgmental or poking fun at those people on the site when I realize that I could very well be talking to one of them at the Mission this Sunday. In that setting, they will not be fighting tooth and nail to defend their poor choices, but pouring out their regret for them, and seeking God's grace and healing relationship.

Ex-rommie Jed gave the talk at the Rescue mission Monday, prepping the men of the mission for this Christmas season from Matthew 2. Mr. Saunders spends alot of time serving the mission and pouring love out on these guys. He played piano for us which is a huge relief for me leading the singing. If the men pick a hymn that is difficult for me to sing, I can still count on him being able to play anything they throw at us. The mission guys sing pretty loud, which I like because it covers up my poor singing. However, it was this week that we found out someone in the front lobby listens to the microphone feed from the service and gets to hear every bad note from my mouth very clearly. For crying out loud! He wasn't complaining when Linda sang though. She can SANG!

Don't ask how or why, just stare in awe at these pumpkin pancakes. It did seem like there was more pumpkin flavor in the whipped cream than the actual pancakes though.

Small group
I took away alot of changes and good direction from my last discipleship group. But as a leader, I'm now digging to find out what I can learn about leading a group of guys from my last leader.

Here's what I've dug up so far..
-It's about relationships.
-Digging into other guy's lives. They've already asked for it, it's your job to do it.
-Ask "how are they better off?" Learning something from the book doesn't count. How have YOU contributed to them, or led them in a direction God used to add to them.
-What things outside of the one night per week can be used to make a difference in their life?

I don't have answers to all that, but some ideas. We're on our way, already having alot of good discussion, persistently encouraging each other to stay in God's word and memorizing. Discussion is a two-way road of course, and they are contributing immensely and deeply.

Noah and I decided to crash Amanda's B-day party after discipleship. We were either too late or she was just too embarrassed to admit that no one showed up except her roomie Joanne :-) Happy Birthday Amanda. I can't give a birthday wish to all my friends on here, but I'll let you have one just this once. Great cake Nichole!

Dude, where'd Noah go?

Ha ha ha...ha. I'm just..ha...laughing so hard right now...HAHAHA, I can't tell...ha ha ha...tell you what's so funny....ha! You'll have to ask them.

Couldn't go to bed without trying this snack idea they told me about. PB and Ice Cream.

Congratulations Pat and Rachel!

Last Saturday I had the opportunity to take a road trip with some friends to Patrick's wedding.

Charlie

Chris

Jerelyn

Co-P

Michael

Chris and Jerelyn fixed up an abundance of food for the entire crew. Oddly, they looked just like the cold cuts we had at their wedding ...?

For the hundredth time, I like new things. So we took a new (to me) route toward Chicago to make it to Sawyer, Michigan. Jerelyn's home town of Gridley has two gas stations, an AC church and some large farm buildings. But there are signs of booming growth in the local economy...a brand new car wash.

We left early enough to spend some time getting ready at a house that the Deutch clan was staying at for the weekend. The place was in an interesting neighborhood.

Trey party in the pew.

Steve and Elise gotta love the fact that there's never a shortage of people to take the kid off their hands.

As we broke out of Peoria, guess what Michael all of a sudden realized was missing...

Who is Pat anyway? What originally attracted me to the group of friends I hung out with at church was the friendly engaging and mature attitudes of guys like Patrick, Rodney, Jon and others. I stick to my friends like glue now, but back then, I wouldn't have been plugged in or have any of these friends if guys like Jon (best man below) hadn't stuck with me and continually sought out ways to encourage and get to know me. Well, times they change, and people get married. Pat is the last of the original guys I knew to be taken by marriage. He's been studying down at Dallas Theological Seminary for a couple of years now, so we've been missing him for a while already.

The Hood Men

Mike and I called dibs on Trey so that Kari couldn't use the "I'm holding a baby" excuse for not dancing, like usual. She was just left with "I don't wanna" like the rest of us. Trey learned all kinds of things being around uncle Mike and Kevin. How to pick a wine and pick on a girl.

The Lueken kids were a little surprised at the real deal being served on the table.

The Deutch man is a dancing fool. At Rodney's wedding, it made me so frustrated to see that he could make dorky dancing cool. It's still just dorky when I do it. After crazy time with the kids, Momma had to break in.

What's Madison mad at me for now? Not dancing. Back off! (don't hurt me)

With Gridley's rock bottom gas prices (at the time), Chris' skills got us back there with a little left to take advantage. Thanks for driving Chris!
